Amsterdam, a city well-known for its rich history, artistic heritage, and iconic canal system, has a myriad of attractions that cater to all types of travelers. As a family-oriented traveler, I’m always on the lookout for destinations that can create memorable experiences for my loved ones. The ARTIS Zoo in Amsterdam, with its diverse array of animals and engaging exhibits, proved to be a perfect destination for a memorable day with my daughter. In this blog post, I’ll take you through our journey as we explored the oldest zoo in the Netherlands and created lifelong memories.
π Our Journey from Marriott Amsterdam Hotel to ARTIS Zoo π
Our day started with a pleasant cab ride from the Marriott Amsterdam Hotel to the ARTIS Zoo. The drive took about 15 minutes and gave us the opportunity to admire the city’s picturesque streets and canals along the way. As we approached the zoo, my daughter’s excitement grew, and we eagerly anticipated the day ahead.
ποΈ The Layout of the ARTIS Zoo π¦
Upon entering the zoo, we were impressed by its spacious layout, which spans 14 hectares in the heart of Amsterdam. The zoo is divided into different zones, each representing a specific habitat or region, such as the African Savannah, the Rainforest, and the Asian Steppe. This well-planned design allows visitors to easily navigate the zoo and makes for an immersive experience.

π The History of the ARTIS Zoo π³
Established in 1838, the ARTIS Zoo is the oldest zoo in the Netherlands and one of the oldest in Europe. Over the years, the zoo has continually evolved and expanded, while remaining committed to its core values of education, conservation, and scientific research. The historical ambiance of the zoo is evident in its charming 19th-century architecture and the numerous monuments scattered throughout the park.

π¨ The ARTIS Micropia Museum π¬
Inside the zoo, we were delighted to find the ARTIS Micropia Museum, the world’s first and only museum dedicated to the fascinating world of microbes. With interactive exhibits and cutting-edge technology, the museum offers a unique opportunity to explore the invisible world of bacteria, fungi, and other microscopic organisms. The visit to Micropia was not only enjoyable but also highly educational.

- The Planetarium: We enjoyed an immersive, cosmic experience at the Planetarium, which hosts daily shows about the universe and our place in it.
- Feeding Times: Throughout the day, we had the opportunity to observe various animals during their feeding times. We especially enjoyed watching the sea lions and penguins enjoy their meals, which allowed us to witness their unique feeding behaviors and social interactions.
- The Butterfly Pavilion: The Butterfly Pavilion was a magical experience, as we walked among hundreds of fluttering, colorful butterflies in a tropical greenhouse.
- The Children’s Farm: My daughter loved interacting with the friendly animals at the Children’s Farm, such as goats, pigs, and rabbits. This area allowed her to get up close and personal with some of her favorite animals and learn about their care and feeding.
